Parent Guide to Advocating Accommodations in School
How can you know if your child's accommodations are being implemented in school?
- Ask your child.
- Meet with teachers and ask to describe how they're implementing your child's accommodations.
- Ask to see work samples of your child's work that reflect their accommodations.
- Put a teacher as a consultant to your child's IEP team to add expertise in making instruction and materials accessible to your child.
- Schedule checkins with the teacher to find out how instruction and materials are accessible for your child and see examples.
- Encourage your child to self-advocate, teach them the language, and model advocacy for them.
