Parent Guide to Advocating Accommodations in School

How can you know if your child's accommodations are being implemented in school?

  1. Ask your child.
  2. Meet with teachers and ask to describe how they're implementing your child's accommodations.
  3. Ask to see work samples of your child's work that reflect their accommodations.
  4. Put a teacher as a consultant to your child's IEP team to add expertise in making instruction and materials accessible to your child.
  5. Schedule checkins with the teacher to find out how instruction and materials are accessible for your child and see examples.
  6. Encourage your child to self-advocate, teach them the language, and model advocacy for them.
